Consolidating financial and cost planning data into one system on SAP HANA transformed data visibility, reporting, and analysis for BD Medical Supplies, saving them millions.

The medical supplies, devices, and technology company is slated to save $5 million by reducing revenue leakage. They also expect to see sales increase by $4.2 million due to higher customer service levels. In addition, the new data visibility will allow them to save $800,000 by reducing out-of-stocks, and they will realize a one-time savings of $1.5 million by reducing WIP safety stock.

On the operational side, BD dramatically improved its reporting efficiency with 80% faster load times and 90% faster queries. They anticipate realizing more than $250,000 with the time their employees will save by not having to compile and adjust reports. A more efficient monthly close process will save $100,000.

Project Overview

BD acquired CareFusion, a global medical technology corporation, in 2014. Faced with disparate systems and an inefficient process of running and consolidating reports across multiple systems, BD sought a way to consolidate their financial and cost planning into one system.

After considering several solutions, they selected SAP HANA and brought The Brunswick Group in to implement the solution. The team, led by SAP HANA Architect & Project Manager Srini Gunturu, migrated all BW and finance data to HANA.

With all the business data in one system, HANA’s in-memory technology dramatically improved the speed of report runs and data loads. BD staff was now able to access large volumes of data without having to run multiple reports and consolidate them.

Moving to HANA also allowed BD to lower its IT costs, reducing data administration and application development costs and creating a smaller infrastructure footprint.

The Brunswick Group’s Process

Mr. Gunturu, along with the Brunswick Group team, served as BD’s strategic partner, working  with SAP to manage each phase of the yearlong SAP HANA project.

After migrating the company’s legacy data to the new HANA database, the team designed the system to give the BD organization robust analytics capabilities.

The Brunswick Group team then built new consolidated planning layouts on HANA, taking advantage of its in-memory database to create a dynamic, scalable solution for BD’s global planning needs.

The new solution brought together all the data from each region into one comprehensive system, allowing BD’s staff to do real-time planning, data import, and export.

The Brunswick Group team also created a strategic 5-year roadmap for HANA, identifying future growth opportunities and giving BD recommendations on how to get added value from the system.
