The Brunswick Group Helps Hess Corporation Transform Global HR IT

BPO and Solution Consulting Provides Strategic HRIS Roadmap

The Brunswick Group worked as a strategic partner with global energy solutions provider Hess Corporation on a multi-year business process outsourcing (BPO) and solution consulting project, completing a global transformation of their HR technology and cutting personnel costs by $200,000.

During the consulting engagement, the Brunswick Group’s team helped create a 5-year strategy for Hess’s human resource information system (HRIS). They evaluated the existing systems, determining if they were serving the organization, identifying opportunities for improvement and providing recommendations for which solutions the organization should retain and which they should replace.

The team, led by Franklin Martinez, created a strategic roadmap for Hess’s HR IT solutions, complete with a timeline for the implementations of the recommended solutions.

Also during the engagement, The Brunswick Group team helped with four major HRIS implementations, providing staffing, tools, and project management for all phases of the projects.

This ongoing relationship with The Brunswick Group was a critical part of delivering the project on time, according to Akira Bell Johnson, former Head of Retail IT Department for Hess Corporation.

“The Brunswick Group has a long history with Hess. It means a lot when you have a long-term partner. There’s start-up work you don’t have to do,” Ms. Johnson said.

Ultimately, Hess transformed its HR operations, including many of its HRIS solutions. Ms. Johnson credited the Brunswick Group team with providing both the level of expertise and quality to make the project a success.

“The quality of the people that TBG sent us was substantially better than other firms. No contest. If I hadn’t used TBG, our projects would have been delayed. Project delays lead to money lost, and multiple rounds of interviews mean more delays and more money lost,” Ms. Johnson said.

Project Overview

The Brunswick Group team began the transformation project by working with Hess’s implementation partner to implement the HR and payroll solution on SAP Software Solutions globally for 14,000 employees and supported the implementation of the payroll solution for 7,000 U.S. employees.

Serving as a liaison between Hess and its implementation partner, Martinez and his team advised on the project and were also responsible for the testing initiative, using a custom parallel testing tool to validate the conversion data from the legacy system to SAP.

“These automated testing tools and analysis tools were key to helping us meet project milestones on time,” Ms. Johnson said. “If we didn’t have those accelerators, we would have been manually comparing results for payroll, which would have led to more project errors and delays.”

As part of the project, Martinez also designed and architected the solution and created more than 40 testing interfaces. Additionally, the team provided project management, system administration, and help with both development and administration of all reporting.

The team played a key role in the system architecture and reorganization discussion as Hess looked at the best way to optimize their HRIS.

Over the multi-year project, The Brunswick Group’s team worked on several major implementations, including the SAP HR module Kronos HR and payroll solutions, Workday, and SAP SuccessFactors.

“I was able to tell the Brunswick Group team what I needed to accomplish and then go deal with my other projects. Franklin knew the vision for the project and what level of quality we needed. He was always further along than I’d planned. He allowed me to focus on other projects that needed my attention,” Ms. Johnson said.
